Year 1 Discovery Camp

From Year 2017 onwards, Prefects along with a select few Year 3 students will play an important role as ACSplorers, or Peer Support Leaders (PSLs) in the Year 1 Discovery Camp, a 4-day orientation programme for the new Year 1 cohort at the start of the year. As PSLs, the Prefects will guide and advise the Year 1s as they take part in various activities learn more about the school and adapt to their new environment, while being able to gain the experience of interacting and leading Year 1s through the camp. This event also promotes bonding among prefects and the new Year 1s so that they may feel welcome into the school family.

Annual Open House

The ACS(I) Open House is just one of the several school events that the Prefectorial Board renders assistance to, and is one of the more major Human Resources (HR) duties that prefects will take part in in the year. For the Open House, prefects are involved in bringing prospective students and their parents for tours around the school, maintaining booths and even describing to parents their own experience in school to allow them make informed choices when choosing a school. Personally introducing the school family to parents and students will also cultivate a sense of belonging within the prefects.

Prefectorial Board and Student Council Investiture

The investiture of each year’s newly-elected Prefectorial Board and Student Council was first merged in 2015, paving the way for greater cohesiveness between the two student leadership groups. Every year, we celebrate the continuity of ACS(I)’s student leadership by welcoming back a past student leader as Guest-of-Honour, to share words of wisdom and offer well-wishes to the incoming leaders. The 2019 Prefectorial Board and Student Council Investiture was held on the 22nd of July.

While the new and existing prefects are being invested, there is, however, also an outvest segment for the graduating leaders, including speeches from the outgoing Head Prefect and Council President, marking the conclusion of their year-long service and entrustment of responsibilities in the incoming batch. The investiture ceremony heralds another meaningful term of service, featuring the Prefectorial Board and Student Council’s combined taking of the Student Leaders' Pledge, worship and a collaborated speech from the incoming Head Prefect and Council President. The graduating Head Prefect and Council President would also pass the school flag to their respective incoming counterparts as a sign of the passing down of responsibilities from one batch to the next. Student leaders from other schools were also invited to witness the investiture, also a means of preserving our external ties.

Prefect Selection Camp (PSC)

The Prefectorial Board will organise and administrate the annual Prefects Selection Camp to select the next generation of Prefects. It was an overnight 2D1N camp,until 2017, when the camp was spread out between 2 days with a 1 week gap in between. It is held towards the end of Term 3 each year, and is also planned by a special group of Prefects called Transcouncil, who are Year 3s being groomed and selected for future positions in the Executive Committee. The Prefect Nominees, who have been recommended by their Class Teachers, and gone through a 3 week long duty phase, will embark on what will undoubtedly be an extremely challenging and demanding selection camp, where the Prefect Nominees will be stretched to their limits as they undergo various rigorous and cohesive tests designed to determine whether or not they have the physical and psychological abilities to become and cope as a Prefect in the future. There will only be a limited number of Nominees chosen to wear the badge and tie and embark on the journey or leadership and service to the school. In the last few years, PSC has been shifting from having a rather intimidating atmosphere to one which is suitable for learning and developing leadership skills, which is far more important than the outcome of their attempts to become a Prefect. PSC also offers existing Prefects the unique opportunity of evaluating future Prefects, while reflecting on their own leadership journey as they themselves were once Nominees. As PSC is organized by future Executive Committee members, it also serves to grant them the experience of organizing a logistically extensive event, and prepares them for their future tasks should they make it into the EXCO.

Prefect Training Camp (PTC)

On the marking days after the End-of-Year Examinations each year, the Prefectorial Board organizes a 2-day Prefect Training Camp. This camp involves the new Assistant Prefects who were selected from PSC, where they will earn their new badge and tie, and is designed to be a largely introductory event for them as they will begin carrying out their morning and HR duties after PTC. PTC also entails promotion exercises for existing Prefects who have excelled in their past year(s) of service while Prefects who put in numerous HR hours are also recognized. PTC begins with an address by our Principal, Mr Arene Koh, who establishes his expectations of Prefects and then engages in a Q&A discussion with the Prefects. This is followed by presentations by Executive Committee members explaining their roles to the new Assistant Prefects and Committee Presentations by SAM and IAM, after which the new prefects will be assigned the committee they will stick with for the next 2 or 3 years. As its name suggests, PTC also consists of gruelling cheering sessions and games where they revisit the Leadership Core Module values. In PTC, all prefects are assigned to EXCO members as mentors to guide them along their journey as a prefect, and the mentors would stick with the group for the duration of this camp, facilitating bonding between the new and existing prefects.
